Story behind the shot
This is a close-up (macro) photograph of one of the most amazingly-colored nudibranchs I’ve ever seen - the Janolus barbarensis. These sea slugs are found along the California coast and Gulf of California in Mexico. The name Janolus is derived from the two-headed god Janus, in ancient Greek mythology. Barbarensis is taken from the city where the nudibranch was first identified: Santa Barbara. This photograph was taken on the wreck of the HMCS Yukon in San Diego, California.
