The Eyes of a Speckled Sanddab

The Eyes of a Speckled Sanddab

Story behind the shot

The sandy ocean bottom off La Jolla Calfornia is home to an array of strange, oddly-shaped fish. This Speckled Sanddab (Citharichthys stigmaeus) is a flat fish in the Lefteye Flounder family that lives on the bottom and rests on its right side. These fish are born with one eye on each side of the head like most other fish, but after a few weeks one eye migrates permanently to the other side of its head.
