The Catalina Island Fox

The Catalina Island Fox

Story behind the shot

Catalina Island fox spotted near the Haypress Reservoir on Catalina Island. In 2004 the fox was listed as and endangered species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, partially due to an outbreak of canine distemper that wiped out a significant percentage of the population. Thanks to the successful implementation of a conservation program by the Catalina Island Conservancy and the Institute for Wildlife Studies, the fox population is recovering; as of the end of 2017, Conservancy scientists estimate there are now over 2,000 foxes on Catalina.
