Bulbs, Fronds and Bryozoans
Story behind the shot
Close-up of the pneumatocysts and fronds of a California giant kelp. Pneumatocysts are gas-filled bladders which keep the upper portions of the kelp afloat. The small white specs on the fronds are tiny colonies of animals called bryozoans (Membranipora tuberculata). Photographed at Casino Point in Avalon, California.
